G1 Auto Maintenance and Light Repair – What the Test Covers

The G1 test is 50 scored questions in 60 minutes, and it is unlike any other test in the series. Instead of going deep on one system it goes wide across seven, covering the maintenance and light repair work that actually fills a service bay. Depth is not what gets you here — breadth is, along with knowing published limits, fluid types and correct procedure.

Content areas and their weighting below come straight from the 2026 Official ASE Study Guide task list. Every question on this site was written against one of these tasks, and the four tests in this subject are weighted to match.

Content Areas on the A1 Test:

  • Engine Systems16% OF TEST
9 questions. Verifying the driver’s concern and road testing, inspecting for fuel, oil and coolant leaks, checking for abnormal engine noises, pans and covers, oil and filter changes with oil life monitor reset, radiator, heater core, pressure cap and recovery system testing, drive belts, tensioners and pulleys, cooling and heater hoses and pipes, thermostat and coolant bypass replacement, coolant testing, flushing and refilling with the correct type, and engine air filter and PCV service.
  • Automatic Transmission/Transaxle7% OF TEST
4 questions. Road testing for normal operation and retrieving codes, determining fluid type, level and condition, leak inspection and external seal and gasket replacement, CV boots, axles, drive shafts and U-joints, cooler lines and fittings, powertrain mounts, and fluid and filter replacement. Light service work rather than internal repair — this is the test checking that you know what the correct fluid is and how to verify a level.
  • Manual Drive Train and Axles11% OF TEST
6 questions. External hydraulic clutch slave and release cylinder service and bleeding, powertrain mounts, external shifter assemblies, linkage and cables, external seals, fluid level and refill, road testing to verify drive train noise and vibration, shafts, yokes, boots and universal or CV joints with phasing verification, drive shaft center support bearings, wheel bearings, seals and hubs, and identifying the source of fluid leaks.
  • Suspension and Steering24% OF TEST
13 questions — the largest area on the test. Disarming the airbag system, power steering fluid level, type and condition, pump belts, tensioners and pulleys, pump noise, vibration and leakage, pump removal and replacement, hoses, fittings, O-rings, coolers and filters, rack and pinion bellows and boots, flushing, filling and bleeding, retrieving codes, electronic suspension components including ride height sensors and wiring, shocks, struts and mounts, springs, bushings and stabilizer links, tire condition, pressure and rotation, wheel and tire runout and balance, and TPMS service and relearn.
  • Brakes20% OF TEST
11 questions. Checking for poor stopping, pulling, dragging, noise, high or low pedal and hard or spongy pedal, master cylinder fluid level and condition and external leaks, flexible hoses, lines, valves and fittings for routing and leaks, brake and ABS warning lamp operation, parking brake indicator, switch and wiring, bleeding and flushing, selecting, handling, storing and installing the correct brake fluid, drum removal, cleaning, measurement and machining to specification, shoe and lining inspection, rotor measurement and machining, pad and caliper service, and wheel bearing inspection and repacking.
  • Electrical15% OF TEST
8 questions. Disarming and re-enabling the airbag and verifying lamp operation, checking voltage, grounds and voltage drops and interpreting the readings, current flow, continuity and resistance, battery load and capacitance testing, maintaining or restoring electronic memory, battery inspection, cleaning and replacement, slow and fast charging to manufacturer procedure, cables, connectors, clamps and terminals, jump-starting with a booster battery or auxiliary supply, starting and charging system checks, and exterior and interior lighting, bulbs, switches and wiring.
  • Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning7% OF TEST
4 questions. Verifying HVAC operation including vent temperature, blower and condenser fan and compressor engagement, identifying the refrigerant type and recovering and recharging to manufacturer procedure, visually checking components for signs of leaks, inspecting the condenser for restricted airflow, cabin air filter replacement, drive belt wear and tension, and cleaning evaporator drains.
