A6 Electrical and Electronic Systems – What the Test Covers

The A6 test is 50 scored questions in 90 minutes — the longest A-series test. Two areas carry 60 percent of it: general diagnosis and body electrical. That reflects what the job has become, where most electrical work is network and module diagnosis rather than replacing an alternator.

Content areas and their weighting below come straight from the 2026 Official ASE Study Guide task list. Every question on this site was written against one of these tasks, and the four tests in this subject are weighted to match.

Content Areas on the A1 Test:

  • General Electrical/Electronic System Diagnosis26% OF TEST
13 questions, and the foundation for everything else on the test. Verifying the concern and visual inspection, researching service information, measuring voltage and voltage drops and interpreting what they mean, current flow and wattage, continuity and resistance, circuit waveforms on an oscilloscope, scan tool data, bidirectional controls and DTCs, finding shorts, grounds, opens and unwanted resistance, measuring and diagnosing parasitic draw, fusible links, circuit breakers, fuses, diodes and relays, reading electrical schematics and symbols, and diagnosing data bus network failures including identifying the network type.
  • Battery and Starting System Diagnosis and Repair18% OF TEST
9 questions. Identifying the low-voltage energy storage system type, voltage and configuration, diagnosing faults caused by battery failure, state-of-charge testing, load and capacitance testing, following manufacturer procedure to maintain electronic memory during service, charging correctly, battery, cable and terminal service, jump-starting safely, diagnosing starting system failures, starter current draw testing, starter circuit voltage drop testing, and starter, relay, solenoid, module and switch replacement.
  • Charging System Diagnosis and Repair10% OF TEST
5 questions. Diagnosing no-charge, low-charge and overcharge conditions, pulleys, tensioners and drive belts, charging system voltage output testing, current output testing, generator control components including sensors, regulators and modules, charging circuit voltage drop testing, connectors, terminals and wiring, and generator removal and replacement.
  • Lighting Systems Diagnosis and Repair12% OF TEST
6 questions. Diagnosing brighter than normal, dim, intermittent, continuous or no operation of exterior lighting, headlight assemblies including aiming and leveling, switches, relays, bulbs, LEDs, sockets, connectors and wiring, turn signal and hazard system faults including flasher units, interior lighting faults, and trailer wiring harnesses, relays and connectors.
  • Body Electrical Systems Diagnosis and Repair34% OF TEST
17 questions — the single largest area on the test. Human machine interface systems including instrument clusters, displays and warning devices, comfort and convenience accessories such as power windows, locks, seats and mirrors, heated and cooled accessories, security and anti-theft systems, and safety systems including supplemental restraints, along with inspecting, testing, repairing and replacing the components, connectors, terminals and wiring behind each of them.
