A3 Manual Drive Train and Axles – What the Test Covers

The A3 test is 40 scored questions in 60 minutes spread across six content areas — more areas than any other A-series test except A6. Nothing dominates, which means a gap in any one area is expensive. Noise diagnosis and setup measurements carry the test.

Content areas and their weighting below come straight from the 2026 Official ASE Study Guide task list. Every question on this site was written against one of these tasks, and the four tests in this subject are weighted to match.

Content Areas on the A1 Test:

  • Clutch Diagnosis and Repair16% OF TEST
6 questions. Diagnosing clutch noise, binding, slippage, pulsation, chatter, pedal feel and release problems, pedal linkage and electronic switches, hydraulic slave and master cylinder service and bleeding, release bearing and retainer, disc and pressure plate, pilot bearing or bushing, flywheel and ring gear inspection including dual-mass flywheels, bellhousing and case mating surfaces and alignment dowels, flywheel runout and crankshaft end play, and powertrain mounts.
  • Transmission Diagnosis and Repair17% OF TEST
7 questions. Diagnosing noise, hard shifting, gear clash, jumping out of gear and fluid condition, external shift assemblies and linkage, gaskets, sealants and sealing surfaces, removal and replacement, internal shift forks and detents, input and output shafts, gears, thrust washers and snap rings, synchronizer hubs, sleeves, keys, springs and blocking rings, countershaft and cluster gear, reverse idler assembly, bearing preload and end play by shim or spacer selection, extension housing and case bores, and transmission sensors, actuators and switches.
  • Transaxle Diagnosis and Repair17% OF TEST
7 questions covering the same ground as the transmission area but on a transaxle, which is why ASE separates them. Add subframe and cradle alignment during removal, plus the integral differential: diagnosing differential noise and wear, removing and replacing the final drive assembly, and inspecting, measuring and adjusting pinion and side gears, shafts and thrust washers.
  • Drive Shaft/Half-Shaft and Universal Joint/CV Joint Diagnosis and Repair13% OF TEST
5 questions on both front and rear wheel drive. Diagnosing shaft noise, vibration and runout, universal joints and constant velocity joints, boots and clamps, center support bearings, slip yokes and splines, drive shaft phasing and balance, and half-shaft removal, inspection and installation.
  • Drive Axle Diagnosis and Repair17% OF TEST
7 questions, and the setup measurements live here. Diagnosing noise, vibration and leaks, companion flange, yoke, pinion seal and flange runout, ring gear runout, ring and pinion sets with collapsible spacers or shims, drive pinion depth, pinion bearing preload, side bearing preload and ring-and-pinion backlash, tooth contact pattern reading, the differential case assembly and spider gears, case runout, and limited-slip and locking differential noise, slippage and chatter.
  • Four-Wheel Drive/All-Wheel Drive Component Diagnosis and Repair20% OF TEST
8 questions — the largest area on this test, and the one most often underestimated. Diagnosing drive system noise, vibration, leakage and steering complaints, transfer case shift mechanisms both manual and electronic, transfer case removal, teardown, inspection and reassembly, fluid service and resetting service parameters, propeller shafts and joints, drive axle joints and half-shafts, wheel bearings, seals and hubs, seals and vents, actuation and engagement faults, and tire condition and matching circumference — mismatched tires cause real driveline complaints.
