Q 01Tech A/B

Technician A says a master cylinder pushrod that is too long can keep the brakes from releasing. Technician B says a pushrod that is too short can increase brake pedal free travel. Who is right?

Q 02Data-Driven

A front rotor is measured after a pulsation complaint. Using the values shown, the technician should:

MeasurementSpecificationActual
Rotor thickness0.980 in. discard0.981 in.

Q 07Procedure/Tool

To avoid inducing lateral runout when reinstalling a wheel, the technician should:

Q 08Tech A/B

Technician A says a rotor must be replaced if machining would leave it below the minimum machine-to thickness. Technician B says the discard thickness is marked on the rotor. Who is right?

Q 09Data-Driven

Brake fluid in a six-year-old vehicle tests at 3.4% water content. The fluid level and color are normal. The technician should:

Q 10Scenario-Based

After a hard stop, one front wheel drags while the others release. Opening that caliper's bleeder screw releases the drag. The cause is:

Q 11Least Likely / EXCEPT

Which of these vehicle modifications is the LEAST likely to affect electronic brake control system operation?

Q 12Component Function

The accumulator in a hydro-boost system:

Q 13Procedure/Tool

Before installing a brake drum over new shoes, the technician should:

Q 14Tech A/B

Technician A says traction control applies the brakes at all four wheels to control wheel spin. Technician B says traction control uses the same wheel speed sensors as the ABS. Who is right?

Q 15Most Likely

New front pads and rotors were installed. The customer reports weak braking for the first several stops. What is the MOST likely cause?

Q 16Least Likely / EXCEPT

Any of these could cause a parking brake that will not hold the vehicle on a grade EXCEPT:

Q 17Component Function

The yaw rate sensor tells the ESC module:

Q 18Procedure/Tool

A steel brake line with an ISO (bubble) flare must be replaced. The technician should:

Q 19Tech A/B

Technician A says a loose front wheel bearing can increase brake pedal travel. Technician B says a growling noise that stops during light braking indicates a failing wheel bearing. Who is right?

Q 20Data-Driven

A brake drum stamped MAX DIA 9.060 in. measures 9.048 in. and is scored 0.008 in. deep. The technician should:

Q 21Scenario-Based

A new master cylinder was installed without bench bleeding. After bleeding all four wheels the pedal is still low and spongy. What should be done next?

Q 22Least Likely / EXCEPT

Which of these is the LEAST likely cause of a brake pedal that is low on the first application but rises on the second?

Q 23Most Likely

An ABS module was replaced. The ABS lamp stays on with a configuration DTC stored. Bleeding and wheel speed sensor tests are normal. What is the MOST likely cause?

Q 24Tech A/B

Technician A says a corroded parking brake cable can hold the rear shoes partially applied after the lever is released. Technician B says the parking brake cable should be adjusted before the rear shoes are adjusted. Who is right?

Q 25Scenario-Based

A collision-mitigation braking system applies the brakes on a clear road. Wheel speed sensors and brake components test normal. What should be checked next?

Reading Your Results: A5 Brakes, Test 1

A score by itself only tells you whether you passed. What follows is how to read the questions you missed on this test. A5 divides cleanly into two halves that fail in different ways, and knowing which half a symptom belongs to is most of the diagnosis.

If you missed the pedal feel questions

Pedal complaints are a language, and this test expects you to read them. A pedal that sinks slowly under steady pressure with no external leak is fluid going somewhere internally, which means the master cylinder is bypassing past its cups. A pedal that is low on the first application and rises on the second is something moving away between stops, whether that is excess rotor runout knocking the pistons back or a loose wheel bearing letting the assembly wobble. A pedal that will not release, or brakes that drag after the pedal comes up, means pressure is being trapped rather than lost, so the compensating port, the pushrod adjustment, or a return spring is holding the system closed. Name what the pedal is doing before you read the options, because each behavior points at a different part of the hydraulic circuit.

If you missed the questions built on a measurement

Three questions here give you readings against a published figure, and each is asking whether you know what the specification is protecting.

Rotor thickness. There are two numbers stamped on a rotor and they mean different things. Minimum thickness is a discard figure, the point at which the rotor can no longer absorb and shed heat safely. Machine-to thickness is higher, and it exists so the rotor still has wear material left after the cut. A rotor that would finish below machine-to is replaced rather than machined, even though it currently measures legal.
Drum diameter with scoring. A drum is measured against a maximum diameter cast into it, but scoring has to be cut out, and cutting removes diameter from both sides. So the decision is not whether it measures legal today, it is whether it will still be inside the limit once the score is gone.
Brake fluid water content. Brake fluid absorbs moisture through hoses and the reservoir vent, and water lowers the boiling point sharply. Fluid can look and measure normal on level and color while carrying enough water to boil on a long descent, which is why the test is a percentage rather than a visual inspection.

If you missed the electronic brake control questions

The ABS, traction control, and stability control questions on this test are about which sensor tells the module what. Wheel speed sensors report how fast each wheel is turning. The yaw rate sensor reports how fast the vehicle is rotating about its vertical axis, which is what the module compares against the driver's steering input to decide whether the vehicle is going where it was pointed. Traction control applies a brake at a spinning drive wheel and may also reduce engine torque, while stability control brakes individual wheels to correct the vehicle's path. A module replacement usually requires configuration before the system will work, which is why a configuration code after a module swap is not a fault in anything you can measure.

If you missed the EXCEPT and LEAST likely questions

Four appear on this test, and missing more than one is a reading habit rather than a knowledge gap. Work out what the three real causes share before you look for the odd one. On the parking brake question, three answers all break the mechanical path between the lever and the shoes, and one is a hydraulic fault that the parking brake does not use. On the caliper piston question, three answers all mean the piston or its bore is damaged or corroded, and one is a normal condition that a proper retraction procedure handles. Naming the shared trait first turns a four-way guess into a single check.

Test 2 covers the same content areas from a different direction, leaning harder on hydraulic valves, line and hose service, and the difference between what a lamp is telling you and what a module is doing. If both free tests land comfortably above 70 percent, the premium tests move into harder diagnostic scenarios on a 30-minute clock, and score you by ASE content area and by question type so you can tell a knowledge gap from a reading gap.
